VINTAGE ORIGINAL UNRESTORED 1942 GLIDER MODEL 35 TRAVEL TRAILER
Available for auction is this classic unrestored original example of the 1942 Glider Model 35 Travel Trailer which is in remarkable condition for being nearly 70 years old. The Glider trailer was the precursor to the house trailer of the 1950s and eventually the modern day mobile home. Conceived as a mobile and temporary form of shelter, it eventually became a primarily immobile and permanent form of housing. First used by vacationers, itinerant travelers, and migrant workers, they gained greater recognition and legitimacy during World War II, when it was used as emergency housing for war workers. In the postwar period, it became a popular form of year-round housing for people on a limited budget. Today, once situated, most mobile homes do not move.
During the early years of the house trailer, production was concentrated in the Midwest. In 1942, Illinois ranked fourth among house trailer-producing states, behind California, Indiana, and Michigan. Chicago was the center of Illinois' house trailer industry. Reflecting the broad manufacturing base of the city and its strength in the areas of metalworking and machinery, the local house trailer industry included two of the largest early producers, Glider Trailer Company and Indian Trailer Corporation. Still, the local industry did not survive into the 1960s. The high cost of labor and factory space in Chicago and difficulties transporting the ever-larger mobile home units through the area compelled manufacturers to locate in other parts of the country.
Very little information exists on the Glider Trailer Company of Chicago, IL or the trailers it produced during the 1940s. Information on the company itself is equally scarce. Even more elusive are original examples of these trailers for sale. This may be partially attributed to the fact that very little in the way of private manufacturing occurred during the wartime period from the late 1930s through the middle 1940s.

HISTORY/DISCLOSURE: This is an original 1942 Glider Model 35 Travel Trailer. We consider this trailer to be in remarkable original shape considering its age is nearly 70 years. This trailer has been garaged since it was purchased. Prior to this the original owner had built a pole barn structure over the trailer where it basically sat for the majority of its life. The trailer currently has what is considered to be the original paint & interior but both need to be redone. Very solid frame, running gear, leaf spring suspension and underbelly with some surface rust. In fact we were quite surprised at how nice the underside was preserved. At some point the shelter that was built over the trailer sustained damage the result of which caused an area of roof damage to the trailer near the rear. Photos show the one hole in the roof near the rear of the trailer and the one hole in the flooring directly under this. These are the only breached areas of the roof or floor. Solid floor and roof structure everywhere else throughout. The trailer has been covered and protected since this occurred to prevent further damage. It is recommended that the buyer have the trailer transported via flatbed carrier as we cannot guarantee current roadworthiness. This trailer is completely original and unmodified and needs total restoration but is just about the most solid original starting point one could wish for. Very few of these can be found available for sale and they are considered rare. The last photo above shows an example of how the Glider can look once it is restored. Several other photos are located in the photo link showing vintage Glider advertisement and restored interior.
