After her divorce from Mottola in 1998, she took control of her own career and has recorded many albums and has expanded her career into acting. After seven albums in 10 years and being named Artist of the Decade by Billboard Mariah suffered a physical and emotional breakdown in 2001 and left the public eye to recover. She has come back and despite struggling initially, is again strong with several albums. She writes most of her own songs.
